Babangida Leaves Nigeria Before Election, To Return After Buhari’s Successor Emerges

General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), also known as IBB and a former military president, has left the country for Germany in advance of the 2023 general elections. According to Naija News, the former military leader left the nation on Saturday along with his second son, Aminu, and a security aide. He is expected to return once President Muhammadu Buhari's successor has been chosen. Several of the elder statesman's children reportedly attended the airport to say goodbye to the former president at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

According to a family source who spoke to Leadership Newspaper, Babangida traveled to Germany for his routine medical checkup and to avoid any potential controversy related to the general elections. Without a doubt, His Excellency decided to leave the election-related controversies alone because he doesn't want to be associated with them. According to the source, "some of the presidential candidates have already asked to publicly visit him, but he has declined and chosen to leave the country instead." It was learned that the former military leader would spend three months in Germany and would come home just before Ramadan. Remember that IBB, whose preferred presidential candidate has not yet been revealed, left a few months before the general elections in 2015 and returned a few weeks later in 2019.
